How I work

bones of the upper back and shoulders

Slow & focused

Instead of full-body massages, I focus on one area, such as the upper back & neck or the hips & low-back.

The goal is to re-set problem areas without overworking sensitive trigger-points.

Sessions are split into two parts, myofascial release followed up by trigger-point.

Two techniques

Myofascial release warms up the tough connective tissue that surrounds your muscles. Then, trigger-point encourages your muscles to relax one layer at a time.

This approach reduces post-massage soreness by allowing your muscles to heal naturally.

Pain is a guide, not a goal

It's a myth that deep-tissue needs to hurt to be effective.

Pain tells us where careful and detailed work is needed. It's one of the few ways our bodies speak to us.

"Good" pain is great but if you can't breathe though it then it's way too much.

Your feedback is always essential to the process..

Techniques

Sessions are usually split into two parts:

  1. Myofascial Release
  2. Trigger-Point Therapy

Myofascial Release

This technique warms and stretches tense collagen and is done without oil (or pain).

It slowly loosens up the rope-like connective tissue that surrounds and shapes your muscles.

It also makes trigger-point more effective.

Pressure-Release Trigger-Point

This gentler approach to trigger-point encourages your muscles to develop new patterns of behavior.

Pressure is applied until a single layer of muscle becomes tense. Then, pressure is released but the hand stays in place.

The advantage of this technique is that it uses your natural relaxation response instead of brute force.

Testimonials

Sondra's Stubborn Headaches

"I'm finally pain free. For the past 20 years I've suffered from worsening migraines and neck and shoulder pain, so much so that I was hesitant to let anyone work on my neck or back. I tried targeted workouts, PT, and acupuncture with no success. Turns out I just needed the right massage therapist. I highly recommend Pista's therapeutic, trauma informed approach. He is knowledgeable, intentional, and listens to the patient. My highly reactive shoulder pain, which built up from almost two decades of chronic stress, is now gone and my migraines reduced from 2-3 per month to 2-3 per year. I had tried other massage therapists but found them too aggressive. Pista's approach met me where I was at and literally changed my life." - Sondra O.
